Mr Valentine Katabirwa
Is a Registered Electrical Engineer and a member of the Uganda Institute of Professional Engineers who has been working in the Ugandan electricity sector for over 30 years. He started out as a trainee electrical engineer in the then vertically integrated Uganda Electricity Board (UEB) where he rose through the ranks to head the national energy dispatch centre at the position of Principal Control Engineer. In 2001, when UEB was unbundled into three successor companies (generation, transmission and distribution), he continued to serve as Principal Control engineer in the Uganda Electricity Transmission Company (UETCL) a position he held until 2008 when he joined the top management team as Head of Department in charge grid asset management and operations that encompassed the system operator and single buyer roles of the company. In 2017 he became the Deputy Chief Executive Officer a role he held up to his retirement in August 2022; he also served as an Alternate Director on the Board of UETCL. In 2020 he served as the Acting MD/CEO of UETCL for six months. He further chaired the UETCL PPA Committee that negotiated over 40 power purchase and power sales agreements under the single buyer mandate of the company. For several years he served as a member representing the System Operator on the Grid Code Committee of the Electricity Regulatory Authority.
